For our and your freedom: what you need to know about the refugee protest in Koksijde
A lot of lies are spreading about the protests of refugees in Koksijde. Read these 10 points to understand what is happening.
1. Refugees complied with and are complying with all requirements related to coronavirus. On May 4, a lockdown, which lasted several weeks, ended at the Koksijde Refugee Reception Center. Refugees did not protest at this time, because there was a reasonable explanation for the lockdown and all of Belgium was at home.
2. The protest began after the mayor Marc Vanden Busche announced a new lockdown and sent the police on June 3 - for no reasonable reason. This time, coronavirus was frankly used as an excuse for discrimination and racism. Read more about this here - https://paulbarbar.blogspot.com/2020/06/police-again-block-refugees-in-koksijde.html
3. There is no “outbreak of coronavirus” at the Koksijde Refugee Reception Center. This is the manipulation that the mayor is spreading, trying to justify discrimination - https://paulbarbar.blogspot.com/2020/05/mr-mayor-stop-manipulating.html
4. There are no “riots” at the Refugee Reception Center. A few dozen children are here, and parents care about their safety. Refugees continue to work inside the center. This is not a "riot", but a protest.
5. The mayor does not speak with people and distorts reality. Local authorities do not consider it necessary to explain their actions to the refugees. Lack of reliable and complete information leads to problems.
6. Refugees are not criminals. Their freedom of movement must not be restricted without legal justification.
7. Refugee children are not criminals. They have the right to go to school on a general basis.
8. It makes no sense to test a small group of refugee children if the rest of the children are not tested for coronavirus. This is not a fight against coronavirus. It is pointless and offensive. This is discrimination.
9. Human rights are universal. They do not change depending on the location of a person and his citizenship. Human rights do not know the differences in skin color, nationality or language.
10. A coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse for violating human rights. Reasonable restrictions in each case should have reasonable explanations.
Please do not incite hatred towards this protest, do not increase the conflict. Authorities should talk with people and respect their rights.
If the authorities groundlessly and tyrannically restricts the rights of a small vulnerable group, this means that in the near future the rights of the majority will be limited. That is why this protest is for our and your freedom.

FEDASIL is responsible on a federal level and Maggie Deblock as responsible minister should be able and willing to overrule the mayor of Koksijde.
